Imagine you are Moses after seeing the miracles in Egypt. Then, leading a bunch of grumbling people around in the desert, you are frustrated and just need to see the fullness of the glory of the God you have been serving. So God backs you into a crevice of the rock and begins to reveal his glory. What are you most impressed with? What does God want to communicate to you? The words of this passage are the answer, He proclaims to Moses that His first and foremost qualities are:
Merciful – willing to forgive
Gracious – willing to give a 2nd chance, willing to provide what is needed
Long-suffering – He is able to continually tolerate all those who seek Him, no matter how irritating they are.
Abundant – not just what is needed, but going beyond and giving more than is asked or deserved.
Goodness – not evil, no scheming on how to force us into obedience, but simply winning us over with his kindness, his gentle dealings.
Truth – there are no lies, no effort to deceive. but eternal truth
