Be Strong of a Good Courage – Joshua 1:9

Joshua 1.9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

In Joshua 1, the phrase “Be strong and of a Courage” is repeated 4 times. It reminds us that strength and courage are needed for many tasks we face day to day. To each task, there is a need for new courage and strength, thus the insertion of “a” in front of courage. God wants to provide that strength and courage for each new obstacle you meet on your journey in life.

1. Joshua 1.6: We will need strength to fulfill the task he has given us to do. For Joshua, he was to conquer the land and divide it among the tribes of Israel. You will need God’s strength and the ability to overcome your fears of failure and lack of knowledge to accomplish the task He has laid on your life, new courage, and new strength for each task.
2. Joshua 1.7 We will need God’s strength and courage to help us to learn and do all that he has commanded us. To work on our own personal character development. Strength and courage to keep endeavoring to do all that He has commanded us.
3. Joshua 1.9 Strength and courage, as we make our plans, and as we allow him to work on our character, we will realize that He it is that is going with us. We are not on our own. We may not see him physically, we may not sense His presence. But He is with us; therefore, we gain strength from that and take courage to approach the obstacles and giants that are in front of us.
4. Joshua 1.18: We will need strength and courage to deal with those who will rebel, argue, and disagree with what we are endeavoring to do. There will always be obstacles when we decide to follow the Lord’s call. Don’t be discouraged, but be encouraged, believing that the opposition is an indicator that the world never agrees with the Word of God and the will of God.
