Choke the Word - Mark 4.18-19 — Montague Baptist Church

Mark 4:18–19 “18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”

What are your thorns, what are the cares and deceitful riches and intense interest and desires that keep you from appreciating the Word of God? Are you reading it for yourself? Are you looking for your own insights and moments when you discover more about God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ?

It is the plight of humanity, it’s the curse of our hearts that we allow so many things to choke off time from God. The TV, social media, hobbies, sports, etc., all seem to more readily grab our attention and consume our time than the word of God. Come on, pull out that weeder, maybe a roto-tiller, and bring the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of Riches (there is a whole separate subject), and the lust of other things choke the word, keeping you from thinking, reading, meditating, and memorizing God’s message for you, today. They put their hands around your spiritual life and choke it, keeping you from breathing in the truth. Thus, we remain unfruitful.

John 15:5 “5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
