Meditation – Psalm 19.14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Psalm 19.14
I remember memorizing this verse many years ago. Reviewing it today, I was struck by how profound it is. It is not just about what I say to myself and others, but it is what I think (meditate) about God that needs to be pleasing. All this takes time, and the reason Scripture memory and meditation are so neglected is that they take time. Time away from the things that please the flesh, food, drink, TV, exercise, sports, and hobbies. But to sit and think through a verse seems unproductive. So we wonder why we feel so weak and so chained down by worry.
Meditation helps us make the word of God part of our lives; it alters our perspective and helps us to control our tongues. The word meditate holds the ideal of thoroughly digesting our food in order for it to become the fiber and strength we need to continue. You can’t imagine going without food; you would be so weak, yet we are listening to the word of God, chewing on it. But without meditation its like spitting our food out, it never becomes part of us. We never let it sink in and become part of the fiber of our life, our strength. This meditation will also help us to overcome those things we are in bondage to. It will redeem us and give us freedoms we never knew. Let the Lord be your strength and redeemer by meditating on his word and making it part of your heart. This is pleasing to the lord.
