Our History
According to the history of Shiloh Baptist Church, King George, Virginia, when their pastor, Rev. Howard W. Montague of Essex County, who pastored there from 1856 to his death in1876, had a strong burden for the lost and convenience to those not geographically located within a three mile radius of their existing local churches. This burden led to the establishing of several mission stations that could better serve those associated with the churches.
One of these mission stations was located at Yellow Hill (near Montague Baptist Church’s current location). After the establishment of this mission station, on October 6, 1888, thirteen members of Shiloh Baptist Church asked for letters of dismissal to formally organize a church at the Yellow Hill Chapel. That church, sometimes referred to as Montague Chapel, is known today as Montague Baptist Church, and honors Rev. Howard W. Montague by bearing his name.
Records indicate the first organized church meeting as being on July 28, 1889 with thirteen Charter Members. The church was first opened for the reception of members on August 25, 1889. Rev. Lawrence B. White served as the protem pastor until November 24, 1889. Rev. Connelly then served as the first formal pastor, serving from 1890-1907.
Our Lord has preserved this little country church ministry through both good and difficult times for 135 years. As a congregation we look forward to how our Lord will continue to use this ministry in the years to come.
