Psalm 143:1–6 (AV)

Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate. I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

Lets take a look at this passage
Note the plea of the psalmist and his aknowledgement of his own unworthiness.
  • How often in prayer do we admit to our unworthiness to even approach the throne of grace?
He acknowledges his own unworthiness and the unworthiness of all men. Why God tolerates us and even listens is a mystery.
His enemies have so oppressed him, the feeling of failure and hopelessness is so strong that he feels surrounded by darkness, like a body lying in the grave.
His heart is overwhelmed he can think of nothing else.
How do you recover from that state when you cant even seem to find the light, no glimmer of hope. The Psalmist tells us how.
  • Remember those days when you experienced the presence of God, reflect on the day you were saved, baptized, some day that God’s presence felt so real.
  • Remember the magnificence, creativity and complexity of God’s creation. The cycles that are necessary to sustain and maintain the physical world in balance.
  • Remember his works in times past. Remember when God did assist, some of the miracles He has mainifested in your life.
  • Remember his works in History. Ready the Old Testament and reflect on the great miracles, provisions and protection God has provided in the past.
  • Thirst after the presence of God, wrestle with him like Jacob did. Thirst for Him as if you were in a desert and could think of nothing else but water.
